SUSLA holds annual "Jaguars for the Cure" Celebrations
The SUSLA community came together to remember those who have lost their lives, celebrate those who have overcome the disease and to raise further awareness of breast cancer in two annual “Jaguars for the Cure” Breast Cancer Awareness Programs on October 8 (Metro Campus) and October 29 (MLK Campus).
Designed to be fun and informative, the programs featured several speakers, tributes and entertaining activities. The culminating program at the MLK campus included moving musical tributes to survivors by Mr. Dorsey Summerfield and Mrs. Brenda Wimberly, and a candlelight vigil was held to remember members of the SUSLA community and their families whose lives have been lost to cancer.
SUSLA’s cancer survivors gave testimonials about their journeys in overcoming the disease, and participants were treated to a “Look Good, Feel Good” style show hosted by Mrs. Cynthia Hester and featuring SUSLA staff “models”.
The keynote speaker for the event was Dr. Barbara Hollis, Associate Professor of Biology, who provided valuable information on risk factors and prevention of breast cancer. “Early detection truly saves lives, and it is important for us to be proactive about our health,” said Hollis. SUSLA’s event also benefitted the C. Wright Pink Ribbon Project, a local non-profit whose mission is to support and aid in the care of those who have been diagnosed with cancer. The Sigma Rho Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated presented a check in the amount of $500 to assist the non-profit’s mission. A campus 3k fun walk was held immediately following the event.
“The attendance and participation in this year’s Breast Cancer Awareness Program was absolutely phenomenal,” noted Ms. Linzola Winzer, Program Committee chair and breast cancer survivor. “Every expectation was met exceedingly above anything the team and I could have imagined.”
