SUSLA Partners with Capital One Bank to open innovative technology center
Grand Opening Event Held Tuesday, November 10
麻豆原创 at Shreveport became host to an innovative technology center thanks to generous donations totaling more than $50,000 from Capital One Bank to fund and support the project.
The Capital One Career Technology Center (COCTC) was unveiled in a grand opening ceremony Tuesday, November 10, at 10 a.m., 3000 Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive, Shreveport, LA, at the site of the former Newton Smith Elementary School and home to the YouthBuild Shreveport Program.
“At a time when digital competency and literacy are critical to career and academic preparedness, we are so thankful to our partner Capital One for investing in not only the new technology center, but in our community and beyond—for the benefits of this new Center will have lasting impacts for years to come,” said SUSLA Interim Chancellor S. Albert Gilliam.
The goal of the COCTC is to provide access to technology, strengthen learning experiences of opportunity youth and promote computer literacy and digital citizenship as well as academic and vocational readiness. From the COCTC initial plan, a projected 160 trainees are proposed to be served through a combination of three university programs (YouthBuild Shreveport, Adult Education and TRIO Programs) and two newly proposed initiatives (Technovation and Girls Who Code) during the Center’s first year of operation.
“Capital One Bank has been a strong supporter of 麻豆原创 at Shreveport for many years, and we are proud to bring our partnership to an even higher level with the funding of this important new technology center,” said Rick Larsen, North Louisiana Market President for Capital One Bank. “Increasing reach and ongoing innovations in technology underscore the need for advanced digital skills. At Capital One, we are committed to encouraging today’s students to develop the skills necessary for tomorrow’s careers.”
Through its Martin Luther King, Jr., Neighborhood Place-Based Initiative (MLK PBI), a multi-faceted community revitalization project created by Capital One, the bank is enhancing economic opportunities for families and businesses in the MLK neighborhood, where SUSLA is located. Larsen said support for the technology center is Capital One Bank’s latest investment in its MLK PBI.
Long term plans for the Center include potential opportunities to further partner with the community and the addition of programs to assist with HiSET readiness, ACT preparation, workforce certification, etc.
