While Latson is well on her way to achieving her goals, her journey has been a complicated one. The first obstacle Latson faced was pregnancy. Due to complications and the responsibilities of being a single mother, she took a break from school. 鈥淟ife has its way of throwing curve balls at you,鈥 reflected Latson. Life seemed to have other plans for Latson. The more time passed, the more her dreams began to fade.

Prior to moving back to Shreveport, where she was raised, La鈥橠ereka McCray was living in Sacramento, California working as a hairstylist. Upon her return to Shreveport, she decided to pursue a new career path knowing that she wanted to create a life for her and her child that would provide stability and a consistent income. Once enrolled at SUSLA, McCray felt slightly out of place due to being older than most of the students she saw on campus.

With unprecedented unemployment levels, many of our friends and neighbors are relying on public assistance for the first time and wondering what the future will look like for them and their families. 70% of small businesses that were forced to temporarily close during the pandemic are not expected to re-open.

麻豆原创 at Shreveport (SUSLA) Veterans Upward Bound is hosting a toy drive on December 8-16, 2020 to benefit families in the community and Toys for Tots. Toys are being collected at SUSLA鈥檚 Main campus located at 3050 Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive in Shreveport and the Metro Campus at 610 Texas Street in Downtown Shreveport.聽
